As recently as 2025, few people asked an AI tool where to eat or who to hire. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of U.S. consumers said they'd used ChatGPT or another AI tool, such as Google's AI Mode or Gemini, to find local business recommendations in the past year. BrightLocal's 2025 survey, which asked a narrower question with a single AI option, put it at 6%. Among people who use AI this way, 63% said they trust its recommendations, compared with 40% of consumers overall (BrightLocal's AI report).
If a customer asked ChatGPT for the best option near them, would your business come up? This guide covers what makes that more likely and how to check.

An AI tool doesn't keep a file on your business the way a neighbor remembers you. For local questions, tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode usually search the web when someone asks and summarize what they find on business websites, Google listings and review sites.
So the practical rule is that AI recommends businesses it can read about. If the facts about your business are written down clearly and agree with each other wherever they appear, you can be part of the answer. If they're locked in images, buried in a scanned PDF menu, spread across old profiles that contradict each other, or missing, the tool has less to go on and is more likely to get something wrong, however good your work is.
You don't need to understand the technology to check the parts that matter.
Your Google Business Profile and your reviews carry a lot of weight, but your own site counts for more than many owners expect. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey asked local-search experts to estimate how much different groups of signals count. For Google's map results they put profile signals first, at about 32%, then reviews at 20% and on-page signals at 15%. On-page signals, meaning what's on your own website such as your name, address, phone number and the words in your page titles, came first for regular local search results, at about a third, and for visibility in AI search, at about a quarter.
Your website is also the one place you control completely, so it's the natural home for the full, current version of your hours, services and service area that your listings can point back to.
You can do a rough check in ten minutes:
If it doesn't, you can fix most of this yourself, starting with your Google profile and the first paragraph of your home page. If you'd rather hand it off, our Growth and Premium plans include the setup that helps AI tools read your site. Word of mouth moved to Google explains why the same work matters for referrals.
